We’ve all heard that saying before. A picture is worth a thousand words. Normally it would be said in context of a nice photo of an incredibly cute child caught on cam doing something incredibly cute children do.

But is it true, though? IS a picture worth a thousand words?

Let’s think about it for a second. This saying goes to demonstrate the power of the visual that is a picture. You look at the picture and you say “Wow! If I had to describe it, It would take me like… a thousand words!”

In that respect, I agree. And I would see your thousand and raise ya’ another thousand when it comes to MY children 🙂 Their pictures could only be described by north of five thousand words.

But is a picture WORTH a thousand words?… I beg to differ.

I could write a thousand word description of a picture and ask a thousand people to read it. I would then ask these people to draw this picture. How many DIFFERENT pictures do you think I would get? Can we agree on “Many”?

Then, I would ask each of these thousand people to present this thousand words description to a thousand other people and repeat that exercise. I bet we would find yet “many” OTHER version of that pictures.

I present to you the shortest story in history (By Ernest Hemingway):

For sale: baby shoes, never worn

And I would like to ask – How many DIFFERENT pictures could be drawn based on these 6 words?

Do you get the picture? (No pun intended…)

If you did, it took me just under 300 words… so – IS a picture worth a thousand words?

I guess it depends on which picture and what words 🙂
